AT 5-001_FA22: Are dolphins really as smart as we think they are? What does it mean to be an intelligent species? What do we know about cognition, behavior, and communication in dolphins? How are scientists able to meaningfully investigate questions of animal intelligence in a species that lives in a world so different from ours? Join us as we explore these questions and seek to critically assess and discuss what it means to be an ?intelligent? animal and investigate the anthropocentric lens dolphin intelligence is often presented in. We will discuss truths and debunk myths surrounding dolphin behavior and cognition as presented in several primary sources and texts. We will design our own method to study aspects of dolphin cognition in cooperation with local aquaria facilities and waterfront excursions to view local dolphin residents and identify the ways we conceptualize intelligence from another perspective.
