This course evaluates the place of street art and sonic-narrative storytelling in American culture. Specifically, we explore the phenomena of pop street art?particularly graffiti, tag and paint bombing?turntable-based DJ techniques and speaking over beats as a way to unravel the complex forms of self-expression that we call ?hip hop.? What stories emerge from the painting and rapping of American urban youth in the 1970s? How does hip hop culture allow for new forms of identity formation and cultural critique? How do these forms of expression change over time and space? What roles do music and culture industries play in repackaging local cultures into proprietary commodities for mass consumption? Student work is evaluated through a range of exercises: essays (personal responses, literary analysis), beat/rhyme mapping, creative work, art-making, group presentations and in-class discussion.
