In this course, we will consider important historical and contemporary political issues such as propaganda, information control, brainwashing, physical control, and nefarious uses of technology. The class integrates the reading of two classic dystopian novels, Brave New World and 1984, and real-world news and academic articles about China, the former Soviet Union, and the United States. We will read these novels in a new way. Specifically, this course will allow you to consider dystopian societies in which the government maintains control over individual lives and to also think about how governments hold similar control today.
