AT 17-001_FA21: Course Alias: at17-1-fa@eckerd.edu
This course will challenge our preconceived notions of the city. More specifically, it will ask us to take certain strategies and theories and apply them to Latin American megacities in order to re-think the manner in which urban space is interpreted. It will set out to analyze the intersection of literature and art with critical theory on urban poverty and the production of space, and how this can help us gain new(er) perspectives on places that work against those of maps and other dominant discourse. We will read fiction such as Cesar Aira's The Shantytown, and discuss cinematic representations of the city (Amores perros; Cidade de Deus) to unveil divergent understandings of the city.
